Three fold Orissan contribution to world culture still remains shrouded in mystery. Firstly, the cult of Jagannath symbolises the syncreticism of Indian culture. The concept of 'Sarva Dharma Samanwaya' in Lord Jagannath by way of assimilating all the great religions emerged in India at different points of history is unique and unparallel.
Secondly, the Orissan Temple buildings skill with perfection in workmanship reached its zenith at Lingaraj Temple in 11th Century, Jagannath Temple in 12th Century and Konark Temple in 13th Century. This style adopted by Orissan sculptures still remains critically unex¬posed to the intellectual world.
Thirdly, the literature which, remains still unsurpassed in case of 'Gita Govindam' composed by Orissan poet Jayadeva in 12 Century. Irrefutable historical evidences have now come up to establish con-clusivelythat 'Gita Govindam' was composed byOrissan poet Jayadeva for the dancing girls (Debadasis) in Jagannath Temple which ultimately became a part of the ritual system of the temple.
These three items of Orissan contribution to world culture have not so far been seriously brought to the scope of research which constitutes the objective of SRI JAGANNATH RESEARCH CENTRE recently founded at PURL |
